Open House – 2023

The Ethiopian Community Open House was on May 18, 2024, from 1 to 4:30 pm. Rebecca Roba was our Ambassador.

Fikir Yilma Leulseged was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in October 2000. She is 22 years old. She is the first child among three children of her parents who live in Ethiopia. She grew up in Ethiopia and attended a high school named School of Tomorrow. Fikir is a 5th-year undergraduate student at Brock University, majoring in Biomedical Science. Growing up in Ethiopia, Fikir was deeply interested in the medical field. Seeing both her country’s privileged and non-privileged sides has fueled her interest in using all resources to help people in need and make a difference in her community. Choosing a field that would be a foundation for her future came easily after finishing high school. She came to Canada in 2018 to start her journey to medical school. But everything changed for her when she took a developmental biology course during the fourth year of her study, which sparked an interest for her in the research field. This helped her to understand that all conditions or diseases start at a molecular level, and this convinced her to believe that she can make a difference in understanding these conditions that people struggle with daily. Fikir has regularly volunteered at the Ethio-Canadian cultural activities since she came to Niagara.
